Zurich is an affluent Swiss city where wealth is clear to see in the clean-cut suits of the purposeful business men walking the streets.
The sound on the streets are the ringing of bells and murmuring buzz of electrical lines running above your head which map the complex intertwining of tram routes, transporting people all over the city.
A great way to start the day in Zurich is by visiting one of the independent coffee houses. Spoilt for choice at the array of pastries and the delightful drinks menu, I found Babu’s Bakery and Coffeehouse was a great place to re-charge and study a map before embarking on our sight-seeing wander through the bustling streets of the city.
The architecture is a juxtaposition of old with new.
The old town situated either side of the north end of the lake is host to high-end fashion shops, Swiss banks and fine boutiques. As you walk down the streets lined with luxurious businesses; both elegant and enticing, you can almost smell the money.
The city centre is host to many eye-catching sights. To obtain a perfect view of the city, climb the 187 spiralling steps within the grand church (Grossmünster) to reach the top of the tower. Once you’ve caught your breath a perfect panorama of the city spanning from the lake to the distant foothills can be admired.
Don’t forget to take a wander by the lake.
Zurich is not a cheap place to visit so be prepared to pay a premium price for your visit to this elegant business metropolis. However, it’s well worth a visit. We spent the day simply wandering, taking in the sights, sounds and smells of the city.
