The historic city of Bruges is located in the north-west of Belgium in the province of West Flanders centred around canals. Nicknamed ’The Venice of the North’. Bruges plays host to thousands of travellers per year enticed by the interesting heritage and beautiful architecture.
The canals surround the city, much like a moat and several bridges adorned with archways such as The Kruispoort entice you into the city. Giant windmills, which you can climb up, provide a view of the cityscape from the East.
As you approach the city centre, winding roads home to vintage antique shops and independent boutiques meander through the city over bridges and crossing canals. Narrow, picturesque alleyways open up into magnificent and decadent squares accompanied by the overwhelming signature fragrance of Belgium chocolate. I highly recommend tasting the decadent delights from the dainty to the divine.
The Medieval architecture remains, in many places, intact and as with many cities, it is important to remember to look up and appreciate the beautiful buildings that take you back in time. Look out for Belfry of Bruges, the City Hall (Provinciaal Hof) and Church of our Lady, to name but a few favourites.
Horse-drawn carriages provide tours of Bruges’ highlights in a medieval fashion allowing you to transport yourself back in time to the once bustling trade town. Market Place, a large open square in the centre of Bruges, is home to bars and restaurants tempting you to dine Al Fresco or to sample the classic Belgian beers. Sit back, relax and watch the many bicycles of Belgium’s Bruges pass you by.
Bruges really is “A place beyond belief”.
