Flowers are often a point of inspiration for fashion designers with beautiful colours, textures and shapes. Different flowers can be used convey personalities and emotions for example, the classic red rose is often symbolic of love.
Not only does Grace Ciao use inspiration from flowers for her fashion illustrations but she uses them in her work to create beautiful mixed-media masterpieces. Combining the flower petals with inks, watercolours and pencils she creates dynamic work with three-dimensional texture and form.
“They help me create prints which I otherwise couldn’t have thought of. I think petals work really well for illustration also because their delicacy and exquisiteness mimic those of a soft fabric.”
Ciao now works as a freelancer and has recently produced pieces relating to perfumes, including my current favourite; ‘Miss Dior – Blooming Bouquet’. Using inspiration from the heart of the fragrance, pink peonies were used to personify the elegance and charm of the beautiful women donned in the gorgeous fragrance.
