A perfect introduction to the Swiss Alps is the wonderful Mount Pilatus, located around an hours drive from Zurich at the foot of the Alps overlooking Lake Lucern.
In all honesty, we found this beautiful scene by a chance exit from the motorway after glimpsing the aquamarine blue of the shimmering lake.
Hergiswil, at the foot of Mount Pilatus, exhibits beautiful views of Lake Lucerne, a picture of natural beauty. On the beautiful sunny day we were there paragliders floated down from the mountain tops over the tranquil lake.
Take a gondola up Pilatus to obtain a spectacular view across the picturesque landscape.
At the top of the gondola from Kriens, there is a restaurant where you can sit and admire the view. The gondola cost 10 Swiss Franks for a return adult ticket. For the more adventurous of you, there is a footpath up Mount Pilatus, which winds through the meadows of fresh alpine flowers. From the restaurant, there is an easy footpath to follow around the mountain with the option to take a second gondola up to the very top of Mount Pilatus’ icy peak for a panoramic view.
This is a perfect spot for those who like hiking and climbing or for those who simply like to admire the view. Lake Lucern also provides a perfect opportunity for boat trips allowing you to cross from shore to shore to visit other interesting villages and towns such as Alpnachstad where the oldest cogwheel mountain railway is situated.
A visit to the Swiss Alps in summer is a must. Magnificent mountain peaks, lush alpine flowers and clear blue lakes! It really is a sight to behold and is the perfect destination for a road trip.
