Verona, famous for the balcony from one of the most talked about love stories of all time – Romeo and Juliet, is a simply beautiful Italian city. Situated in northern Italy, in the Veneto region, Verona is a vibrant and prosperous trading city.
First things first with any European city visit. Breakfast. Continental breakfast of coffee, fruit and croissants is the perfect way to start the day. Verona has lots of little cafe’s and coffee shops where you can pick up quick and tasty treats before setting out to explore.
3 of Shakespeare’s plays are set in this picturesque city – Romeo & Juliet (of course), The Two Gentlemen of Verona and The Taming of the Shrew. Yes, that means that Verona is often filled with coach-loads of people trying to get selfies with the infamous balcony, but if you look beyond the fantasy of the star-crossed lovers you’ll see that there is a lot more to behold and appreciate. Of course, while you’re there you may as well pay a visit to the balcony everybody is talking about!
The centre of Verona is situated in the beautiful market square Piazza Erbe.
Taking its name from the city’s old herb market, today in Piazza Erbe you can find many stalls there selling a variety of souvenirs, food & drink delicacies and gifts. The fountain in the middle of the piazza dates back to Roman times.
One of the main highlights that you have to visit in Verona include the Roman arena.
Today the Roman arena is used as an open air opera house. The 1st century arena is the third largest in the world, crafted out of pink marble, and is well preserved especially after surviving a notable earthquake in the 12th century.
There are lots of beautiful streets surrounding the arena, with restaurants of pastel hues. We got a classic Italian pizza and sat back in the shade whilst enjoying the bustle of this beautiful city.
While you are in Verona, make sure to take to the back alleys and admire the architecture. You’ll find a range of beautiful hidden courtyards, old buildings, beautiful statues and hints of elegance, even down to things like window shutters and outdoor staircases.
There are some real treasures to be found off the beaten path.
Head down to the river for views up to the hills and visit the Castelvecchio and San Zeno Maggiore that sit alongside the riverside.
Verona is truly a romantic city full of lots of elegant charm and character. We had a lovely day there and would love to visit again. Have you been to Verona? What are your favourite things to do there? Leave a comment below!
