A couple of weeks ago we went exploring in Old Town – one of our favourite parts of Southampton. Old Town is full of historical gems including the Bargate, the Medieval Merchant’s House, the remains of the medieval town walls and the Tudor House and Garden.

The Tudor house is located in Bugle Street, opposite St. Michael’s Square (our dream place to live), in Southampton’s Old Town. It is probably one of Southampton’s most iconic historic buildings, revealing over 800 years of history. Having walked past the Tudor House many times admiring it from the outside, we decided to stop in for a coffee in their garden coffee shop.

The cafe overlooks the Tudor Knot Garden, developed in the 16th century, which transports you back in time. Sitting out in the autumn sunshine to admire the Tudor gardens,  you could almost forget you are in the centre of a bustling city. The gardens have been based on historic manuscripts, containing herbs and edible plants that would have been used in the Tudor period. You can see parapets and mounds connected to what would have been the old Southampton walls; whole site is full of interesting historical features around every corner.

The Tudor House Garden is a real hidden gem in Southampton, I’d definitely recommend a visit. I learnt so much about the history of the city from a few of the signs in the garden, I can’t wait to go back and look around the Tudor House Museum to find out more.
